RIDING THE WAVE TO OUT OF SIGHT VISION

BEVERLY HILLS, CA -- Gone are the days when mother nature was thought to be the ‘be-all-end-all' when it comes to eyesight. First came glasses, next were contact lenses, then a breakthrough with LASIK, the procedure that reshapes the cornea to give better vision. Now, doctors have essentially "one-upped" mother nature with LADARWave, the only FDA approved technology that is routinely giving patients even better vision than the once thought perfect 20/20.

"With the LADARWave, patients will commonly experience vision better than they have ever had (even with contacts or glasses), often seeing 20/15 or even 20/12," stated Andrew I. Caster, M.D., Director of the Caster Eye Center in Beverly Hills and one of the first refractive surgeons in California to use the LADARWave in his practice. "This breakthrough technology allows me to give patients better vision than nature could have ever given them in the first place!"

According to Dr. Caster it is the unique marriage of wavefront technology and the LASIK procedure that makes the LADARWave so successful. Until now, refractive surgeons using LASIK have applied an overall prescription to their patient's eye, just as glasses or contact lenses do, in order to correct their sight, oftentimes leaving many flaws in the eye untouched. (Caster likens the procedure with buying a new pair of shoes. Although your foot may be the same size as your neighbors, this does not mean that your shoes will fit the exact same way. This is because shoe makers use an average size when producing shoes. If you want shoes that fit your feet exactly, you would have to have them custom-made.) The same is true of the eye.

Even though one person's prescription may be the same as another, no two eyes are ever exactly the same. In fact, different parts of the eye actually require different prescriptions. This is where the LADARWave's wavefront technology comes into play, applying a slightly different prescription to each of hundreds of points on the eye.

After a complete eye examination, measuring the thickness and curvature of the cornea, the patient sits in front of the wavefront-measuring instrument. An invisible beam of light is used to detect imperfections or "aberrations" in the patient's eye. Errors in focusing light are measured and then transferred to the laser, which automatically tailors the LADARWave procedure to exactly match the individual's eye, creating a customized treatment. The entire process takes only a few short minutes.

Dr. Caster added that the LADARWave is the only wavefront-laser combination to be FDA approved. Produced by Alcon Laboratories, Inc., the laser used is the LADARVision, which not only gives patients the ultimate in vision, but also is one of the only lasers to successfully diminish complaints of halos, glares, and poor night vision, which are common side effects the LASIK procedure is known for.

"These two technologies, wavefront and LADARVision are a revolutionary breakthrough for refractive surgeons, said Dr. Caster. "Used in combination, we're giving mother nature the one-two knock out!"
