Performs LASIK Surgery on Two Opera Singers
Two Surgeries – Wednesday August 21st
and Wednesday September 18th

New Jersey Eye Laser Centers, a company that offers surgical services to both doctors and patients, and Doctor Richard Witlin, a well-known surgeon, will perform LASIK vision correction surgery on Scott Altman and his wife Lisa Altman. Both Altmans are opera performers who work primarily with the Opera Festival of New Jersey. Scott Altman is currently appearing at the New York City Opera, making his Lincoln Center debut.
Scott Altman is a bass who recently appeared in PRINCESS TURANDOT and THE RAPE OF LUCRETIA in New Jersey, he will be appearing in CARMEN, DON GIOVANNI, LA TRAVIATA, LA BOHEME and THE MARRIAGE OF FIGARO at New York City Opera this season. Lisa Altman has worked as Artistic Administrator for the Opera Festival of New Jersey, as well as performing in various opera houses. They are husband and wife. Both decided to have the surgery because of the difficulties they found performing with contact lenses. Glasses were of course impossible, and the heavy makeup that opera singers made contact lenses extremely uncomfortable. Both surgeries are now complete and both patients are discovering the joys of 20/20 vision.
Doctor Richard S. Witlin has been a pioneer in refractive surgery and is one of the most experienced LASIK surgeons in the New Jersey area, having performed more than 4,000 LASIK surgeries. Dr. Witlin received his medical degree from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City. He completed his internship and residency at the Albany Medical Center Hospital in Albany, New York, where he served as chief resident in ophthalmology. Dr. Witlin is an avid theatergoer, world traveler, wine collector, and family man who enjoys spending time with his three children.

LASIK before LINCOLN CENTER DEBUT
Scott Altman a bass-baritone soon to debut at the NYC Opera and his wife recently made a very big decision. Both young opera singers are nearsighted and were wearing contact lenses on stage. The wearing of contact lenses on stage is not without peril. Not only is there an ever present risk of infection from the heavy stage makeup, which tends to run under the hot lights, but make up under a contact lens is down right painful. It also presents situations of humor when none is appropriate to the opera story line. This recently occurred to Scott in the Opera Festival of New Jersey's production of the "Rape of Lucretia". As the heartbroken but supportive Collatinus gazed into the eyes of his raped and distraught wife to declare his unwavering love, Scott looked into the face of an opera singer with a contact lens sitting on her lower lashes. Although he fully appreciated her discomfort it was an effort to stay in character and not smile.
Together they made their decision to seek relief and found it in the experienced surgical hands of Dr. Richard S. Witlin and New Jersey Eye Laser Centers. After consulting with Dr. Witlin and determining that both were candidates for refractive surgery, the decision was made for Scott to have surgery first. Three days after the LASIK procedure was performed by Dr. Witlin at New Jersey Eye Laser Centers, Scott's was seeing 20/20, back in rehearsals and perhaps for first time looking forward to performing in full stage makeup.
Scott's wife Lisa Altman a fellow opera singer on childcare leave from the stage to care for six-month-old Zachary Altman, has discovered that tiny inquisitive hands enjoy reaching for glasses and poking mommy's eyes. She is awaiting her scheduled surgery, anticipating a return to the operatic stage without the concern of a lost contact lens or acute eye pain, and freedom from worry as tiny fingers explore her face.
Scott will be making his Lincoln Center debut this season at New York City Opera, where he will appear with "new eyes" in LA BOHEME, DON GIOVANNI, CARMEN, LA TRAVIATA and LE NOZZE DI FIGARO.

Dr. Witlin continues to perform refractive surgery as he has since 1981. In 1997 he himself was a LASIK patient and has not worn corrective lenses since. He is an enthusiastic refractive surgery educator and has personally helped to train and supervise many doctors in the surgical and medical management of refractive patients.

New Jersey Eye Laser Centers also serves as a resource and training center for eye care professionals and maintains a commitment to excellence at their New Jersey, New York and Wisconsin Centers.
